Flying private saves the one thing money cannot buy back: time. You arrive shortly before departure, use smaller airports closer to where you are going, and fly on your schedule. If you have not chartered before, here is what to know.

Choosing the right aircraft

  • Light jets suit short trips with a few passengers, such as Geneva to Nice
  • Midsize and super midsize jets offer more cabin space and range for flights of three to five hours
  • Heavy and long-range jets cross oceans non-stop, with space to sleep, work and dine

The right choice depends on the number of passengers, the luggage, the distance and the runway at your destination. Ski equipment, golf bags and pets all need to be planned for in advance.

What affects the price

Charter is usually priced per flight, not per seat. The main factors are the aircraft size, the flying time, positioning (flying the aircraft to your departure airport), overnight crew costs, airport and handling fees, and demand on your dates. One-way flights can cost close to a return if the aircraft has to fly back empty.

Empty legs

An empty leg is a flight an aircraft makes without passengers, for example after a one-way charter. They can be good value, but the timing is set by the original booking and can change or be cancelled at short notice. They suit flexible plans, not fixed commitments.

On the day

Private terminals typically let you arrive shortly before departure, and you board with passports checked in the lounge. Catering can be ordered to your taste, and cars can meet you at the aircraft where the airport allows it.

Safety and documents

Ask who operates the aircraft and holds its air operator certificate, and make sure everyone has the right passports and visas. A good broker or concierge will be clear about who the operator is.
