This is an illustrative use case: a typical request, and how we would handle it.
The scenario
A collector has followed this month's watch auction results and wants to bid on an independent watch in an upcoming New York sale. They cannot follow the sale live and want to avoid overpaying.
Why it takes a specialist
Independent watches are setting strong prices this autumn, and a timed online sale can close quickly. The price paid includes the buyer's premium and any taxes or import duties, so a limit set on the hammer price alone can be misleading.
How we would handle it
- Review recent results for the same model to set a realistic range
- Request the condition report and ask the auction house about service history, originality and accessories
- Work out the total cost, including buyer's premium, taxes, shipping and insurance, and agree a firm limit
- Help the client register and arrange a commission or telephone bid
- In parallel, check our network for comparable watches available privately
- Arrange insured delivery, with payment in fiat or crypto for anything we source
What the client gets
A clear budget before the sale, and a second route to the watch if the lot goes beyond it. See our guide on how to buy a watch at auction.
Good to know
